Notre Dame spotlight …

Q: Who’s this?

A: Brian Kelly, new Head Coach for Notre Dame. Great choice. It’s about time ND hired an experienced head coach, as opposed to assistants (i.e. Weiss, Willingham, Davies). Kelly resigned as head coach for 12-0 Cinncinnati.

Q: What bowl is Notre Dame (6-6) playing this year?

A: None, they declined invitations from Little Caesar’s and GMAC citing that a minor bowl would be beneath them. Not really, but that’s the word.  Sad

Mark Ingram, tail back for the Alabama Crimson Tide won the Heisman last night with 227 first place votes. Can you believe that it’s the first Heisman for Alabama … ever!

Runners up:
Toby Gerhart – Stanford running back. 222 first place votes. Should have won; did you see the Notre Dame game?
Colt McCoy – Texas QB – 203 first place votes.
Ndamakong Suh – Nebraska defensive back – 161 first place votes. Remember when Warren Sapp made the short list? When asked what he thought of his chances he looked at the trophy and said, “That dude’s holding a ball, there. That’s not what I do.” He came in last.
Tim Tebow – Gator QB – 43 first place votes. Points taken away for crying during the post SEC Championship Game interview.

Football FAIL

This is DeSean Jackson’s classic pre-touchdown celebration fail when he played for California. He’s now with the Eagles.

I must say, the Bucs Cheerleaders looked great yesterday, as usual!  Smiley

Q: Who is this?

A: I would have never gotten this. It’s Mike Holmgren, quarterback for USC, 1966-1969.

Mike was drafted in 1970 by the then St. Louis Cardinals in the 8th round, 201st overall. The delay and poor draft was largely due to a knee injury in his senior year. He finished his one and only year in the NFL with the Jets. Of course, Mike’s claim to fame is taking a cocky Notre Dame quarterback named Joe Montana and turning him into a legend.

Anyway, currently, after declining the Seattle GM position this week, the Cleveland Browns are currently going nuts to get Holmgren to take over the Head Coach position, currently held by Eric Mangini. Mike is supposedly going to make an announcement, one way or the other, tomorrow. Hope he takes the position with Cleveland. They need him and I think he’s a class act in the NFL.

Notre Dame Rant:

After snubbing two “inferior” Bowl offers and ending their season prematurely, good ole’ Notre Dame (6-6) snubbed Joe Patterno’s invitation on behalf of the Big 10 to join their Conference, citing the premium associated with being independent.

Here’s what I think … college football is about two things, and two things only: winning your Conference and winning the National Championship. Although bowls are great, they’re nothing more than holiday entertainment and an opportunity for the schools to get some network bucks. Notre Dame places far too much emphasis on winning the elusive National Championship, forgoing the opportunity to put some Conference trophies in the cabinet. They haven’t won a Championship since 1988! Geesh ND, give yourselves, students, alumni a chance to celebrate something. Join the conference.

Q: Who are these dudes?

A: This is most awesome photo I’ve ever seen! It’s the QB A Class of 1970, Archie Manning (Ole’ Miss), Jim Plunkett (Stanford), Rex Kern (Ohio State), and Joe Theismann (Notre Dame). Look at Theisman, ha ha; I played golf with Joe five or six years ago at Old Memorial in Tampa.

If you missed the Little Caesar’s today (Marshall and Ohio), there was a woman referee.

36yo Sarah Thomas, who apparently has been officiating games since October, is the first female referee in college football, ever!
