August 23, 2009

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was held out of contact drills this week because of a sore lower back. Coach Urban Meyer said Saturday that Tebow is “fine, 100 percent,” adding that the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner will be back to full speed in practice Monday and had no disk issues.

Hmmm. Wonder how he got a sore back?

Yesterday, Lou Holtz (a/k/a Dr. Lou) predicted Florida and Notre Dame in the BCS title game.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Out-on-a-limb-even-for-Dr-Lou-Irish-in-the-ti?urn=ncaaf,184500

Notre Dame huh? They've certainly padded their 2009 season with light weights and got out in the poll at 21 (although producing a 7-6 season last year), but I thought the BCS computers took strength of schedule into account.

Lou's got it half right. I'm thinking Gators and Sooners...the rematch.

West Virginia? Well, that’s a tossup. The way it’s working so far since USF joined the Big East is USF and WV are trading wins every year. It’s USF’s turn in 2009.

Interesting. Rivals.com, in laying out the best 102 games for the 2009 season, picked West Virginia at USF No. 11.

Bowden Retiring after this season?  http://www.fanblogs.com/florida_state/007689.php

Ain't gonna happen Dadgummit! Too many perks.

UPDATE: Fox Sports Joins Rumor Mill: The program [Florida State] has been idling in neutral, a coach-in-waiting has already been named, and now the NCAA is threatening to vacate 14 of Bowden's victories related to an academic scandal. How much longer does the venerable, 79-year old coach want to remain on the sidelines? If Florida State's appeal to the NCAA gets denied, the coach's battle with Joe Paterno for the most wins in major college history is essentially over. And if that happens, returning to coach in 2010 becomes a little bit less enticing for Bowden.

There's no question that the SEC is best when the Tide Rolls. I think Nick Saban has the program back between the ditches and will be watching as much 'Bama this year as they toss at us.

Fox Sports (August 26): Will Alabama be able to build on 2008? The Tide turned last fall under Nick Saban, coming within a strong final quarter in the SEC title game from playing for a national championship. It would go on to get embarrassed by Utah in the Sugar Bowl, but the message to the rest of the league was clear...'Bama is back in a big way after a decade of intermittent mediocrity. The key for Saban and the program will be to remain hot even after losing some important parts, such as QB John Parker Wilson and LT Andre Smith. Remember the name Greg McElroy, Wilson's successor. He could hold the key to the Tide's fortune in 2009.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Simeon Rice is making a comeback with the new United Football League. The New York Sentinels announced Thursday that they had signed the 35-year-old defensive end. Rice last played in the NFL in 2007.

Wow. That's awesome. Simeon was great when he was with the Bucs.

What the hell is the United Football League, anyway?

Which Poll do you trust?

I’ve always trusted the AP Poll over the USA Today Coach’s, principally due to intradivisional squabbling. It just seems to me that the Coaches can exact a little vengeance against an intradivision rival that may be deserving of a few more points.

Then of course, the AP apparently has its issues, too. In the linked article, NBC Sports took a look at the complete ballot of the two sport-writers that did not vote Florida No. 1 in the pre-season poll.

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/08/22/revealed-the-voters-who-dissed-the-gators/

In summary, the worst (a Pittsburg-based writer) received the worst shellacking because he:

•   Voted Northwestern No. 21, which means he accounted for all 5 of Northwestern points.
•   Voted Tennessee No. 16, which means he accounted for 10 of Tennessee’s total 15 points.
•   Left poor Georgia (sitting in the final 13th spot) off the top 25 altogether. Ha-Ha, Bulldogs.

Poor disgruntled UGA.

Oh...ha-ha-ha. Here's a website that lists the 10 hottest ESPN Reporters. For Erin Andrews they used that pic of her we have on page 2, except that she's in a photoshopped KU Jayhawks shirt. I don't think they noticed. Tooooo funny.

http://www.uncoached.com/2008/09/11/the-10-hottest-espn-news-reporters/

Silly Jayhawks!

And as to the Top 10 Hottest ESPN Babes, poor Pam Ward (the only lady ESPN play-by-play booth announcer) was left off the list altogether, while our girl Ashley Russell from Rival.com and NOT ESPN made the freaking list!

Well I think Pam's hot...kind of...well, not really...she's actually kind of manly. Never mind. (She's the one on the left.)

SI.COM: South Florida's Leavitt first to release ballot, Bowden could follow.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/08/26/polls.update/index.html

SI.com's coaches poll record request project netted its first ballot Wednesday, and the ballot of a legend may be on the way. Wednesday morning, South Florida's assistant athletic director in charge of communications, sent the preseason ballot of USF coach Jim Leavitt.

Levitt’s Ballot (Final Poll to the right):

1. Oklahoma 3
2. Florida 1
3. Texas 2
4. USC 4
5. LSU 9
6. Ohio State 6
7. Virginia Tech 7
8. Penn State 8
9. Oklahoma State 11
10. Florida State 19
11. Alabama 5
12. North Carolina 20
13. California 12
14. Georgia 13
15. Nebraska 22
16. TCU 17
17. Notre Dame 23
18. USF 41
19. Miami 33
20. Georgia Tech 15
21. Utah 18
22. Pittsburgh 29
23. Rutgers 32
24. Cincinnati 30
25. Missouri 34

Left off top 25: Miss St. 10; Oregon 14; Boise St. 16; Iowa 21; BYU 24; Oregon St. 25

Let’s seeee here. Hmmm. I’ll let it go.

Yeah, No. 18! That's 8 of USF's total 11 points in the poll.

Oh. Hah! Levitt was the only coach in the country to vote Oklahoma No. 1.

You know? I would have expected the only ballot to have Oklahoma No. 1 would be Bob Stoop's. So now all his guys know he didn't vote 'em No. 1. Hah!

I'm still going to bet you that Pete Carrol is the only coach with USC No. 1.

Okay, perhaps I’m over analyzing this ballot release a bit, but Coach Levitt may have tossed an egg in my face, here.

My contention on the previous page was that inner conference rivalry could drag points down, and on that basis, the Coaches Poll wasn’t trustworthy. I still hold the trustworthy point, but not for dragging rankings down. Check out Levitt’s card. He has Pitt, Cincinnati, and Rutgers, all Big East Teams, in the top 25, when they overall placed 29, 30 and 33, respectively.

That’s interesting. Perhaps he’s boosting the Conference?

We need to get this season going….

Hmmm....I see the Raiders still suck.

The UFL looks interesting. With only 4 teams, that's a good foundation to build upon with big name coaches. I look forward to watching the championship game on Thanksgiving instead of watching the losing Detroit Lions play again. I've started to see commercials for the UFL on HDNet.

I watched the rebroadcast of that game on the NFL Channel Sunday. That team needs some help. By the end NO was playing the waterboys on O, and still walking all over them. Garcia had a mercy touchdown at the end, though.
