IMZ-Ural, a Russian motorcycle manufacturer, has a line of hacks (motorcycles with sidecars) that they say is growing, or is going to grow, in popularity in the States. Dealerships launching in 2009.

What do you think of their line? Looks pretty WWII’ish, but retro can be cool.

http://imz-ural.com/default.htm

In order:

Retro   $13,999
Tourist   $11,499
Patrol   $12,999
Sahara   $13,949

I'd like one only if I could wear a full WWII Nazi SS uniform with Nazi helmet while riding it. I also need a gunner in the side car. That's the only way to roll in one of those things.

I have considered trying out one of these for a while now. There is a Ural dealer about 20 minutes from my house. I have been there to check them out. They are intriguing. No doubt they are well made, but the prices are pretty outrageous.

They keep improving them and nowadays they have big Brembo brakes and electronic ignition so in that regard they are superior to their ancestors. However, as far as I know, that's the same BMW engine that the Russians stole from Germany and took into the mountains of Ural so these bikes are an odd mix of old and new technologies.

Driving (not riding) them takes a different set of skills too. They tend to push left on acceleration and pull right on braking. (I think that's right). Cornering is a completely different ballgame from a two-wheeler, obviously. I understand they are pretty slow too.

But good points would be the ability to ride (drive) in any weather including snow, and lots of cargo space.

They show up on CL once in a while, but never for cheap. I haven't ruled out getting one someday.

I know there are kits out there, but who else make a production Hack?

BTW When I went back to that Ural site this morning, it's changed and they've added a couple bikes, one called Red October.

Red October $12,999
Ural T   $9,999
Gear Up $13,599

I would call that Riding with Death.

Does the sidecar detach so you can send an unweary passenger ghost riding into a graveyard?

I was surfing a new biker blog today for weird bike pics and, bam, there was your coffin hack staring me in the face!  Shocked

The Blog is MotoCycho out of Northern Cal. I don't think he knows anything about it, because they usually have some commentary along with the pictures. He probably just tripped over the picture somewhere. You should lob him a note or comment and tell him where it came from. What a coincidence!  Cheesy

Cool stuff. I was thinking that those pics were taken in California because of all the mountains in the background.

That hearse resembles the original Batmobile a little bit.

That stuff if awesome. I love the rocker covers, too. I do have a skull license plate frame that's bordered with skulls. I bought it at a shop on Main St. in Daytona. Did it originally come from your brother's shop?

Cycle World has an article about Ural hacks this month. I also found this footage of an old Zundapp hack.
